- Alpha Style
- Yo-yo style where the next move or portion of a trick is begun before
the preceding one is complete. Popularized by Doctor Popular. Examples
include The Matrix and Skin the Gerbil.
- AP
- Competition division focusing on performacne skill rather than just
pure yoyoing skill. Abbreviation for artisitic performance.
- ASG
- Adjustable String Gap; Abbreviation Playmaxx used for its Adjustable
gap system.
- ATW
- Commonly used abbreviation for the trick Around the World.
- Auto Return
- Type of yo-yo that returns on its own when a sufficient amount of
its spin has been exhausted.
- AYYA
- American Yo-Yo Association . The
AYYA publishes a newsletter, maintains the official yo-yo world records,
and sponsors the Yo-Yo Hall of Fame.

- BAC
- Bay Area Classic
- Backspin
- Utilizing the yo-yo when it is spinning in the opposite direction.
A simple example would be to throw a sleeper then try to swing the
yo-yo up into a trapeze. The yo-yo will be spinning backwards compared
to a normal trapeze and will probably try winding up. Picture

- Ball Bearing Axle
- A type of yo-yo axle utilizing a ball bearing to enable yo-yos to
sleep much longer than traditional fixed axle yo-yos.
- Ball bearing
- Component of ball bearing axle consisting of a inner and outer race
which are separated by a series of small balls. The inner race is
held stationary relative to the yo-yo (spinning with the yo-yo) and
the outer race is held securely by the string. The string grips the
outer race allowing the yo-yo to spin freely and for relatively long

- BC
- One of the yo-yo brands of What's Next Mfg., producers of wooden,
fixed axle yo-yos such as the Rainbow and the Apollo.
- Bearing
- Yo-yo axle type using a ball bearing.
- Beefcake
- A yo-yo modification involving the addition of a second bearing
on the axle of a ball bearing yo-yo.
- Bind Return
- Intentional insertion of extra string segments into the yo-yo gap
(usually a wrap around the axle) in order to get an unresponsive yo-yo
to return.
- Binds
- Yo-yo move involving an extra wrap of string around the axle. Mindbend,
Jedi Mind Trick and Jedi Boingy-Boingy are examples.
- BPT
- Abbreviation for Brake Pad Technology
- Brake Pad Technology
- Playmaxx's term for their patented adhesive friction response system
used in their Proyo branded ball bearing and brass transaxle yo-yos.
- Brake Pads
- Playmaxx/Proyo adhesive friction disks with the appearance of cork
but actually made of recycled rubber.
- Bucket Style
- Type of tricks characterized by the formation of a bucket shape
with the strings, with the yo-yo being moved into and out of the bucket.

- Abbreviation for Team Losi Cherry Bomb
- Centrifugal Clutch
- Mechanism which allows auto-return yo-yos to return. When the yo-yo
slows down the clutch engages and the yo-yo winds back up.
- Ceramic Bearing
- The balls in a ceramic bearing are made from solid silicon nitride
rather than metal. See this page for more
information.
- CF
- Abbreviation for the Playmaxx (Duncan) Cold Fusion yo-yo.
- CFGT
- Abbreviation for the Playmaxx (Duncan) Cold Fusion GT yo-yo.
- Cherry
- Yoing style consisting of two yo-yos joined by one string with a
floating counter weight in the middle.See also Hydra.
- Clip Video
- Long form yo-yo videos usually featuring several yoers or tricks.
Often they are associated with various competitions or club meetings.
Citadel of Sector Y is generally credited with popularizing this format
in the online yo-yo community: Also Clip Vid.
- Combo
- Series of preexisting tricks or moves combined together. Short for
combination. See Trick(s).
- Compulsories
- The list of tricks that all competitors in any particular competition
division complete in order to see who qualifies for the freestyle
portion of the competition. Some competitions have done away with
compulsories, substituting invitation freestyles or choosing contestants
through pre-contest video submissions. Other contest allow high finishers
in other contests to automatically qualify for the freestyle but still
count their compulsory points in totaling their final score.
- Counter Weight
- Weight used on the finger end of the string when doing Freehand
Style tricks. Often a die or rubber ball.
- Custom
- Yo-yo company responsible for producing various aluminum yo-yos
such as the Reactor, Chain Reactor, Axl, and Axl Elite.
- CW
- Competition division in which tricks are done with a yo-yo attached
to a counter weight (rather than to ones finger). Abbreviation for
counter weight. Sometimes referred to as AAAAA of 5A. See Freehand.

- A yo-yo that has stopped spinning.
- Dif-Pad
- Adhesive friction add-ons with a rubber like surface; produced by
Dif-e-yo.
- Dismount
- How you go about getting a spinning yo-yo off the string during
a string trick. Examples include back off, fly away, ferris wheel,
and unravel.
- Double Loop(ed)
- When stringing a yo-yo, the loop of string goes around the axle
of the yo-yo two times, preventing the axle from moving freely inside
the loop. A fixed axle yo-yos cannot sleep if it is double looped.
Double looping makes transaxle yo-yos more responsive.
- Drop
- Yo-yo move where the yo-yo is caused to flip over and then drop
down to another lower string.See Flop.
- Duncan
- Long existing yo-yo producer, now a part of Flambeau. Producer of
the Duncan Freehand, Avenger, Ballistic, and the classic fixed axle
Imperial® and Butterfly®.

- EX
- Abbreviation for the Buzz-On Industries Element X.
- Extinction
- Letting a yo-yo sleep until it completely ceases to spin and loses
its gyroscopic stability (allowing it to tip, tilt, or twirl). World
Sleep records are timed to extinction.
- Extromanual Yoing
- Using objects besides your own hands and body while yoing. Examples
could be rings, chairs, stair rails.

- Abbreviation for Duncan Freehand yo-yo.
- FH2
- Abbreviation sometimes used for the second generation Freehand yo-yo
from Duncan.
- Fixed axle
- Type of yo-yo where the axle is fixed (unmoving) to and spins with
the yo-yo. The fixed axle spins in the loop of string while sleeping.
- Flipover
- When a trapeze is missed, one can do a flipover in order to get
the yo-yo into the correct trapeze position. Some competitions allow
flipovers to count in some of their divisions.
- Flop
- Yo-yo move where the yo-yo is placed in a bind and then is flipped
over back onto the single string. Gyroscopic Flop is one example.

- Free Generation
- Yo-yo move involving stopping and restarting a yo-yos spin while
in the middle of a trick. Popularized by Johnnie DelValle. Also called
FreeGen for short.
- FreeGen
- Short form for Free Generation. Also a termfor regenerations done
while Freehand/counterweight yoing.
- Free hand
- When describing tricks the term free hand is used to indicate the
hand not connected to the yo-yo. Works for both left and right handed
yoers. See Throw hand.
- Freehand
- Patented style of yoing popularized by Steve Brown where the yo-yo
string is not attached to your finger. Instead the finger end of the
string is attached to a counter weight such as a die or small rubber
ball. Also a yo-yo by Duncan.
- Freestyle
- A short (usually 3 minutes) yo-yo routine set to music and scored
by judges a part of a yo-yo competition.
- Friction Biscuits
- Duncan rubber adhesive friction disks used in Freehand yo-yo as
well as the Spintastics Great White and Eclipse.
- Friction Discs
- Another term for the Duncan Friction biscuits. Also a generic term
for all adhesive friction add-ons, such as the turbo disk, performance
ring, Dif-Pad, and brake pad.
- Friction Sticker
- Another generic term for all adhesive friction add-ons, such as
the turbo disk, performance ring, Dif-Pad, and brake pad.
- Frontstyle
- Yo-yo style of one handed string tricks begun with a sleeper type
throw. Opposite of Sidestyle.
- FS
- Abbreviation for Freestyle.

- Gap
- Space between the inside of the two halves of a yo-yo. Also called
the string gap.
- Gap Adjustment
- Methods for changing the width of the gap on a yo-yo. Some methods
of gap adjustment include click adjustable (Mondial) and twist adjustable
(Viper). Not all yo-yos have an adjustable gap.
- Go West
- Yoing style featuring the use of a giant loop of string unwound
all the way to the finger knot. Similar to Sumo
but differs in the presence of the finger knot. First popularized
by Taka.
- Grind
- When a yoer touches a sleeping yo-yo to a surface(including their
own body).
- Gyroscopic Stability
- Principle which states that a spinning object resists changes to
its axis of rotation. It is this principle which keeps a spinning
yo-yo upright and stable.

- German yo-yo company that produces the Viper, Lizard, Cobra, Tiger
Snake and Coral Snake yo-yos.
- Hesitate
- Sometimes used as a synonym for sleep.
- Hop
- Yo-yo move where the yo-yo is tossed or "popped" into
the air and then caught again still spinning in the same mount. Eli
Hops are an example of a trick with hops. See also Pop.
- Hub
- Inner portion of a yo-yo half that is made up of an inner and outer
part. The metal part of a Viper or Coral Snake half.
- Hug
- In a sidestyle trick to move the throw hand to the other side of
the mount and turn slightly so you are in a frontstyle position.
- HW
- Abbreviation for the Yomega Hyper Warp yo-yo.
- HWHW
- Abbreviation for the Yomega Hyper Warp Heavy Wing yo-yo.
- HWW
- Abbreviation for the Yomega Hyper Warp Wing yo-yo.
- Hydra
- Yoing style involving the use of two yo-yos attached together at
opposite ends of one string. See also Cherry

- KK
- Abbvreviation for KonKave. Used as an adjective (KK Bearing) and
a verb (to KK a bearing or yo-yo).

- Laceration
- Yo-yo move involving pulling a sleeping yo-yo upwards, whipping
the string around the yo-yo several times and landing in a mount without
the yo-yo returning.
- Landing
- Successfully completing a trick.
- Liquid Template
- Method of dyeing yo-yos or parts of yo-yos involving using a mask
such as glue (hard mask) or liquid dishwashing detergent (soft mask)
and submerging in dye. Named by Doctor Popular and further refined
by Scarecrow.
- Looping
- Style of trick that involves keeping the yo-yo moving in loops inside
or outside your hand. Loops are a regeneration of spin energy.
- Lube
- Yo-yo slang for lubrication. A lube is a viscous substance added
to a bearing or other transaxle to increase the level of responsiveness
of a yo-yo.
- Lubing
- The act of adding lube.

- Mod
- Yo-yo slang for modification. A material change to a manufactured
yo-yo in order to alter its playing characteristics.
- Modding
- The act of applying a mod to a yo-yo.
- Modern
- Yo-Yo shape involving a relatively slim line and a somewhat open
gap. An all around shape suitable for both loping and string tricks.
Examples include the Henrys Coral Snake, the Duncan Proyo, and the
Spintastics Technic.
- Modified
- Yo-yo shape; synonymous with Modern.
- Moebius
- Yo-yo style involving performing tricks inside the widely opened
up finger loop.
- MOTFT
- Abbreviation for Man on the Flying Trapeze.
- Mount (1)
- The process of getting a spinning yo-yo onto a segment of string
as a part of a string trick.
- Mount (2)
- The position that the yo-yo, string segments and the yoer 's fingers
are in once the spinning yo-yo has been placed on a segment of string
as a part of a string trick. Examples include over, under, front,
pinwheel, split-bottom, 1 and 1/2, hydrogen bomb, and wrist.
- MSF
- Abbreviation for the YoYoJam Mega SpinFaktor.
- MSF2
- Abbreviation for the YoYoJam Mega SpinFaktor 2.
- Mutation
- When the string doesn't wrap cleanly in trick holds. Examples include
an extra wrap around the finger or a cross in the string where the
yo-yo comes onto a string segment on the "wrong" side. See

(Eclipse, Freehand), cushioning (Lizard, Original Spinfaktor), gap
spacing and adjustment (Tigershark, Viper) and response (Matrixx,
Mega Spinfaktor 2).
- Organic
- Yo-yo dyeing technique created by Eric Wolfe.
- OS
- Competition division in which tricks are done with a yo-yo and string
which are not connected together. Abbreviation for Offstring. See
AAAA and Offstring.

- Picture tricks
- Style of tricks that involve manipulating the string into shapes
that resemble things. Eiffel Tower is one example of a picture trick.

- Yo-yo company started by Donald Duncan, Jr. Recently purchased by
Duncan from Tom Van Dan Elzen.
- Pog
- Paper or plastic removable cap printed with words or artwork used
on the sides of some yo-yos.
- Pop
- Yo-yo move where the yo-yo is tossed or "popped" into
the air and then caught again still spinning in a different mount.

- Response(iveness)
- Term used when referring to how easy it is to get a yo-yo yo return.
A very responsive yo-yo returns quickly and without much effort.
- Response System
- What type of yo-yo technology makes a transaxle yo-yo returrn. Examples
include starbursts, lubing, brake pads, turbo disks, performance rings,
friction disks or stickers, and Yo-Rings.
- Rim
- Outside edge of a yo-yo half.
- Rim Weight
- Weight added to the edge (rim) of yo-yo or a reflection of the difference
in the weight distribution between the rim and the center of the yo-yo
halves. Generally higher percentages of rim weighting versus center
weighing creates faster spins, longer sleeper and more stability in
regards to tipping or flipping.
- Roll
- Yo-Yo move where the yoer's hands move in a repeatable, circular
direction either forwards or backwards within a mount. Barrel Rolls
are an example of a roll.
- Roller Bearing
- Type of bearing that uses cylinders instead of balls between the
races. No yo-yo actually uses roller bearings though some erroneously

- Sidecap
- Removable piece on the side of a yo-yo, usually printed with words
or graphics.
- Single Loop(ed)
- When stringing a yo-yo, the loop of string only goes around the
axle one time, allowing the axle to move freely inside the loop on
a fixed axle yo-yo. In order to sleep fixed axle yo-yos must be single
looped.
- Sidestyle
- Yo-yo style of one handed string tricks begun with a trapeze type
throw. Opposite of frontstyle.
- Slack
- Style of trick where the yo-yo is moved into and out of loops made
of loosely held portions of the yo-yo string.
- Sleep(ing)
- A yo-yo is said to be sleeping when it is spinning at the end of
the string and not in the process of being thrown or in the process
of returning to the hand.
- Slick 6
- A very popular six strand cotton/poly string.
- Slick 8
- Eight strand combination string.
- Slings
- A yo-yo move where the yo-yo rotates around ones finger in a number
of circles. Singapore Sling and Cold Fusion have Slings in them. Also
carrying bag from Yomega.
- Slimline
- A subset of yo-yo shape where the gap is not as wide
as normal. This allows for increased ability to loop but still allowing
a wide gap. Examples include the X-Games.
- Slip Knot
- Type of knot used to make a small loop on the end of the yo-yo string
that tightens securely on the yoer's finger.
- Snap Wind
- Winding up your yo-yo by snapping or flicking your fingers rather
than manually winding it around and around.
- Soloham
- Yo-yo style involving tricks done with two offstring yo-yos.
- Somersault
- Yo-yo move where pushing your fingers into or pulling your fingers
against the collected strings causes the move in an arc forward or
backward eventually coming to rest in the same position as before,
but often with an additional wrap of string around your finger.
- Sour Side
- When the yo-yo rides on the string against the direction or grain
of the string wind it is said to be on the sour side. Credit to Spintastics

- SP3
- Abbreviation for the Stunt Pilot 3 by Playmaxx.
- Spacer
- Small specially shaped piece of metal or plastic placed on each
side of a yo-yo bearing in order to hold the inner race fixed and
allow the outer race to revolve freely. Picture
(thanks to Jim Pankey).
- Speed Rings
- Rubber rings included with Team Losi yo-yos to insert in groves
in those yo-yos to increase rim weight.
- Speed String
- Fornerly the term for Team Losi's Combination string, similar to
Slick 6. Also generic term for combination string.
- Spintastics
- Yo-yo company; maker of the Tiger Shark, Technic, Tornado, and Great
White.
- Stall
- Slight hesitation at the end of a forward pass or loop before the
yo-yo returns.
- Stalls
- Looping trick, where after a throwdown, as the yo-yo returns to
your hand instead of catching it you let it touch your hand as you
throw it into a forward pass; as it returns to your hand let it touch
again and hop it down into a throwdown again and repeat. Creates the
appearance of the yo-yo hovering for a moment.Also incorporated into

- Starbursts
- Raised lines on the interior surface of a yo-yo half for the purpose
of increasing friction so that yo-yos will be suitably responsive.
Renegades and the various Team Losi yo-yos are among the yo-yos that
use starbursts.
- String
- Long, thin, twisted piece of cotton or similar material which serves
to connect the yo-yo to the yoers finger.
- String Segment
- A piece or segment of string between two corners.
- String Tension
- The tightness or looseness in the twist of the string. You will
often see people throwing UFOs or Lariats in order to adjust their
string tension prior to certain tricks.
- String Tricks
- Tricks done by manipulating strings and the position of the yo-yo
while the yo-yo continues to spin or sleep.
- String Twist Method
- Technique used for setting world sleep records where the yoer holds
the yo-yo just inches above the yo-yo and at eye level and makes minute
adjustments to the twist of the string to keep the yo-yo spinning
in the middle of the gap.
- SSCB
- Abbreviation for the Silver Series Cherry Bomb from Team Losi.
- SSDB
- Abbreviation for the Silver Series Da Bomb from Team Losi.
- SSF
- Abbreviation for the Super SpinFaktor from YoYoJam.
- Suicide
- Yo-yo move where a loop of string is released, swung in an orbit,
and then caught again.
- Sumo
- From Super Moebius. Yoing style created by Doctor Popular which
consists of yoing in a giant loop of string without finger loops.

- When describing tricks the term throwhand is used to indicate the
hand that is connected to the yo-yo. Works for both left and right

The outer part is actually the transaxle which spins around the inner
axle. The string then hugs or grips the outer part. These transaxles
are made of various materials as well (brass, nylon, Teflon). Ball
Bearing yo-yos are a kind of transaxle which uses ball bearings.
- Transitionals
- Yo-yos created when production moves from one color of plastic to
another. Transitionals may have color characteristics of both the
new and old color as well as blends of the two. Proyo, Duncan and
SuperYo have released transitionals in recent years.
- trap(ping)
- Catching the yo-yo against your body at the end of a trick. A trap
will prevent a trick from being counted as successful during competitions.
- Trick(s)
- Series of yo-yo moves combined together in an original way. See
Combo.
- Trick Ladder
- Type of competition where competitors work through a list of tricks
in a prescribed order. Generally winners are ranked by how far through
the list they get with no, or one miss. Specific rules differ by competition.
- Tub Strips
- Adhesive strips made of rough, bumpy rubber which Rubbermaid markets
to use in bathtubs to prevent people from falling in the slipper tubs.
Cut into rings they have been used to increase friction in various
yo-yo modifications.
- Turbo Disks
- Thin, adhesive, cloth rings used in Tom Kuhn yo-yos to provide increased
friction and thereby response in their ball bearing yo-yos.
- Two-handed
- A misnomer since it really means two yo-yos. Doing tricks with two
yo-yos simultaneously. AA division.
- Type 6 string
- Yo-yo string consisting of six separate strands.See String Comparison for more information.
- Type 8 string
- Yo-yo string consisting of eight separate strands.See String Comparison for more information.

- Underpass
- Yo-yo move where the yoer pulls a segment of string from one side
of a mount under the yo-yo to the other side.

- Weight Rings
- Rings of various materials added to the rims of yo-yos in order
to increase the ratio of rim to center weighting.
- Whip
- Yo-yo move where a loop of string is whipped quickly around to catch
a moving yo-yo.
- Wind
- Wrapping the string around the axle of the yo-yo so that it is prepared
to be thrown.
- World Champions
- Winners of various divisions at the World
Yo-Yo Contest.
- World
Yo-Yo Contest
- Yo-yo competition which crowns the world champions in various divisions.
Held annually in late July/early August.
- Worlds
- Term commonly used to represent the World
Yo-Yo Contest.
- Wraps
- Subset of moves where while looping or or doing other moves the
string is wrapped around various parts of the body.

- X Division
- Yo-yo competition division which encompasses all styles except traditional
one hand (A) and two hand (AA) styles. Examples include AAA, freehand,
offstring, and Moebius.

- Y3A
- Yomega Yo-Yo Association; also Yomega's yearly world contest.
- Yomega
- Yo-yo company which produces the Brain, Raider, Hyper Warp, and
Rev-Rim yo-yos as well as other models.
- Yonomicon
- Groundbreaking yo-yo book by Mark McBride which presents theories
on how to transcribe and learn tricks.
- Yo-Ring
- Patent pending response system from YoYoJam, consisting of rubber
o-rings recessed into the inside of the yo-yo halves.
- YoYoJam
- Yo-yo company which produces the Shockwave, the Mega Spinfaktor,
Nightmoves and the Hitman as well as other models.
- YYJ
- Abbreviation for YoYoJam
